What a difference you did make!
Fall 2023 trip to Guatemala shows what your support can do!
A hugely successful mission trip led by Mike Mallahan AUD and co-sponsored by Child’s Passport to Health, a team of 28 healthcare professionals, and translators from the greater Seattle and Portland area traveled back to Morales, Guatemala to provide audiology care and ENT surgery to children from all areas of Guatemala both urban and indigenous mountain regions. There was an additional team of 16 welcoming us made up of a Guatemala surgeon, general practice as well as audiology colleagues. Surgeries were in coordination with Jeff Adams MD, from The Everett Clinic and Sam Shiley MD, from The Oregon Clinic.
First 2 days involved clinic visits for over 400 children being assessed for ear and hearing care. The rest of the week involved surgical procedures for 57 children; 43 new hearing aides provided, including 2 bone-anchored (cochlear) and follow-up hearing evaluations for 150 kids who were seen previously.
I would like for you to follow one of our kids journey of courage and better health. Meet 5 yrs. old Scarlet Ceballos. For the past couple years, she had frequent ear infections, hearing loss and snoring when asleep. After going through hearing tests and medical evaluation her diagnosis was moderate to severe hearing loss and enlarged adenoids. The plan was for hearing aid fitting along with removal of her adenoids.
Getting fitted for hearing aids in the morning.
Preparing for Scarlets surgery later that day.
We are filled with hope for all the children this team has impacted and pride for the amazingly talented and dedicated volunteers. Volunteers who will, despite enormous challenges, find a way to help kids and collaborate with and train colleagues.
From our Volunteers:
“I have a couple of new things to be thankful for – renewed and new friendships with all of you great people; the memories of so many children who are in better health because of our work and the hundreds of grateful parents.”
“I am a better person for having served with you all”
What happens now?
Your support, whatever size, is so important! Your contribution helps support not only this trip but future trips! Funds are used to support volunteer trips to purchase medications, equipment such as hearing aids, and surgical and medical supplies.
Consider joining our volunteer efforts! We would love your involvement and lots of opportunities are calling.
Your generosity is so appreciated! Here’s a link to our website for ease in contributions.
